Optic Atrophy Causes, Symptoms, Side Effects & Treatment

What Causes Optic Atrophy? The optic nerve, which is made up of nerve fibers, transmits impulses from the eye to the brain. Optic Atrophy is caused when the eye's impulses cannot be sent to brain because of factors and interferences. These factors include:

  • Poor Blood Flow

  • Glaucoma

  • Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuritis, also known as an Optic Nerve Stroke

  • Tumors can cause pressure on the optic nerve.

  • Multiple Sclerosis can cause inflammation of the optic nerve.

  • A birth defect

  • Family History

What is the Symptom of Optic Atrophy? When should I consult a doctor about it? Optic Atrophy symptoms may appear mild at first, but you should visit your doctor as soon as possible if you experience any type of vision problems. Optic Atrophy symptoms include:

  • Blurred Vision or a reduction in sharpness of vision

  • Colour identification problems

  • Side Vision and Peripheral Vision Problems

  • As soon as the symptoms appear, you should address any vision-related issues. They may be part of a larger health problem.

Optic Atrophy

How can my doctor diagnose Optic Atrophy ? An ophthalmologist can diagnose Optic Atrophy using an op-ophthalmoscope. The doctor will examine your optic disc at the back where the optic nerve enters your eye. You may be asked to undergo an MRI scan if the doctor suspects a tumor. Is it possible to treat Optic Atrophy? Modern Medicine has no cure for Optic Atrophy. However, it depends on the cause. If the Optic Atrophy was caused by an inflammation from MS or a tumour, the vision may return to normal once the inflammation subsides. If Glaucoma patients are treated early, they can slow down the growth of optic atrophy.
