Male and Female Pattern Baldness

Male and Female Pattern Baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia, are the most common forms of hair loss in men and women, respectively. They are hereditary conditions that result in progressive hair thinning and loss, mainly affecting the scalp. While there are similarities in their underlying causes, there are also some differences between male and female pattern baldness.

Male Pattern Baldness (Androgenetic Alopecia) - Symptoms, Causes, and Side Effects:

Symptoms:

  • Gradual hair thinning, typically starting at the hairline and the crown of the head.

  • Hair loss creating a "M" or "U" shaped pattern in the frontal scalp.

  • Progressive receding hairline and bald patches forming at the crown.

Causes:

  • Genetics: Male pattern baldness is inherited from the family, particularly from the mother's side. It is linked to sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of the male hormone testosterone.

  • Hormones: DHT binds to hair follicles, leading to their miniaturization and a shorter hair growth cycle, resulting in thinner, weaker hair strands over time.

Side Effects:

  • Male pattern baldness can lead to self-esteem issues and affect a person's self-confidence and body image.

  • It may impact social interactions and relationships, causing emotional distress.

Female Pattern Baldness (Androgenetic Alopecia) - Symptoms, Causes, and Side Effects:

Symptoms:

  • Thinning of hair on the crown of the head.

  • Widening of the center parting of the hair.

  • Unlike male pattern baldness, women typically retain their frontal hairline.

Causes:

  • Genetics: Female pattern baldness is also influenced by genetic factors, similar to male pattern baldness.

  • Hormones: Hormonal changes, particularly during menopause, can contribute to hair thinning. DHT plays a role in female pattern baldness as well.

Side Effects:

  • Female pattern baldness can lead to emotional distress and lowered self-esteem in affected individuals.

  • Women may feel embarrassed or anxious about their changing appearance.
